I’m a lifelong learner with a degree in Health Services Administration, an advanced degree in Human Resources Management, and further graduate study in Theology. So, if you’re looking for someone with broad educational bona fides, I’ve got you covered. But I know you want a coach with more than academics creds.

Much of my most significant growth and learning has been through the experience I’ve gained as an Army Officer and Medical Evacuation Aviator, Corporate Executive, and Non-Profit Leader.

But not that every job I had was as glamorous as being an ultra-cool, Nomex-clad helicopter aviator (trust me on this!) or globe-trotting executive. I also gained surprisingly deep knowledge about life and leadership as a Boy Scout camp counselor, a clueless carpenter’s helper in a shipyard (I had no skills for that!), and as a “Pizza Crud” (seriously!) and “Beer Tender” at a local pizzeria. In some ways, those were my most formative experiences (and I’m still cleaning out from under my fingernails!).

Many years ago, I started referring to myself as a “Recovering HR Guy.” I knew that leading people was more than systems, processes, procedures, and compliance. I discovered (although I always knew it at some level) that a key to thriving as an effective leader included putting others first, remaining curious, having a life outside of work, finding ways to have fun, and remaining unfazed regardless of the circumstances.

In the last ten years of my corporate career, I started, built, and led the global leadership development group for a subsidiary of one of the world’s largest corporations. You might be familiar with them – they make big yellow and black machines – among other things.

It was there (as VP, Leadership Development, and Chief Burger Flipper) that I built a great passion for helping others on the journey to Servant Leadership – which was the core of our approach to leader development. We saw exciting growth in many of our leaders.
